Open Science

At CERN, we believe that the practice of open science is key to delivering on our organizational mission.

Introduction

Open Science is a cornerstone of CERN’s mission and a defining element of its contribution to society. As an intergovernmental research organisation dedicated to advancing knowledge for the benefit of humanity, CERN has long championed openness as a driver of scientific excellence, collaboration, and innovation. By making research outputs as accessible and reusable as possible, Open Science strengthens transparency, reproducibility, and the long-term value of the scientific record, while enabling researchers, educators, industry, and the wider public to benefit from CERN’s work.

CERN’s Open Science activities span a broad and interconnected set of domains. These include Open Access to scientific publications, Open Data initiatives that support responsible sharing and reuse of research data, and the promotion of Open Source software and hardware as essential building blocks of modern scientific infrastructure. Open Science at CERN also encompasses practices and services that advance research integrity, reuse and reproducibility, as well as the provision of sustainable infrastructures, training, and community engagement to support adoption across experiments and departments.

Anchored in CERN’s Open Science Policy, these activities reflect CERN’s long-standing values of openness and international collaboration. They also contribute directly to CERN’s digital priorities by strengthening the stewardship, sustainability, and reuse of scientific knowledge and research infrastructures.
