AI Programme Committee
The AI Programme Committee coordinates AI across CERN’s sectors, experiments and services, so that the Organisation moves in a coherent direction while scientific and operational autonomy stays where it belongs.

What the Committee does
Stewards the Strategy
Keeps the AI Strategy up to date as technology, research and CERN’s priorities evolve, and proposes major revisions to the CIO Committee for Coordination and Collaboration (C4).
Reviews AI initiatives
Reviews AI projects and centrally managed investments for alignment with the Strategy, and escalates to the C4 when major strategic, institutional or resource questions arise.
Reports on resources and impact
Monitors how resources allocated to the programme are used, and assesses the scientific, operational and institutional impact they produce.
Represents CERN externally
Supports CERN’s high-level engagement on AI with the European Commission, funding bodies and industry partners, from a consistent and well-prepared position.
Connects with the scientific community
Engages with established scientific community initiatives and international bodies on AI matters of shared interest, in a spirit of partnership and respect for their autonomy.
| Body | Role |
|---|---|
| CERN Management | Holds ultimate accountability for the Core Plan, approves strategic priorities and the resource envelope, and reviews progress annually |
| C4 Steering Committee | Steers and coordinates the implementation of the AI Strategy across the Organisation, and decides on major strategy revisions and significant resource commitments |
| AI Programme Committee | Coordinates the programme, prepares recommendations for the C4, and reports on delivery, resources and risks. It recommends and does not itself take formal decisions |
| Sectors, departments and experiments | Remain responsible for scientific direction and for implementing AI in their own domains. |
Areas of expertise
The Committee brings together senior experts from across the Organisation, selected to cover the competences its mandate requires. Membership is reviewed annually by the C4.
